Prednisone is a cortico-steroid, and yes taking it can shorten ones temper. Usually it's prescribed in a "dose pack" so you take seven pills the first day, four pills the send day, and so on. Some asthma patients have to take it long term and for them the side effects are more serious. Water retention and bloating for one,. Eventually, it can effect bone density. That takes many months though, and it's not an issue if you're taking the one week course.

Long-term use can be very risky. The blood vessels get very weak, as do the bones. It contributed to my brother's death.

Short term use can be very helpful in getting rid of otherwise resistant conditions. Tapering may not be necessary if it is very short-term, but it's defnitely essential if you've been taking it for a long time. The results of just stopping after several weeks can be very, very serious. If it has only been a few days, that is not a problem in most cases.
