Sorry this involves water, but it works.

Take as large a mouthful of water as you can. Hold your fingers in your ears as you swallow the entire mouthful of water. By the time you get it all down (4-6 swallows), your hiccups will be gone.

i have not read a book, but

scientifically this will always stop hiccups (dont know it it ALWAYS stops hiccups though)

have someone put there hands over your ears so its like a suction(no air can go in) then drink water,

supposedly the air pressure from pushing on your ears when swallowing pushes the extra air out of your lungs

I find this works for me 100%. Pour a glass of water. Light a match and then throw the lit match into the water. Immediately drink some of the water. I believe the sulfer smell and taste from the match being put out in the water is what works.

I lay on my back, and change my breathing rate to slightly slower.
A couple minutes and the hiccups are gone. Worth a try, no ?

WELL. actually, everyones answers are semi-correct. its mostly about taking your mind OFF of the hiccups! this always works for me though...

get a large glass of water, hold a pencil under your tongue, and try to dring the whole glass while you still have the pencil under the tongue! :D

try it, it helps me out, hiccups can be annoying.

Hold your breath until you can't anymore, or try drinking water with your head up-side down
