My son is turning 7 yrs old and would like a Superman Party. Do you have any cheap ideas to decorate or have fun with? I can't afford to buy all the expensive Superman themed stuff. The party will be in a big back yard. Thanks.

Since it's so soon after Halloweeen, you might check the clearance sections of retailers in your area. If I remember there were a lot of Superman themes for Halloween. They should all be about 70% off. You could also let the children make their own capes and decorate them. That should keep them busy for a while. Let them draw their own superman comic. Let them color and make their own decorations and party favors. Keep them busy or they'll go wild! Sounds like fun and lots of memories.

Our son is also turning four and we're having the party at our house. He wants a costume party and we are going to let the kids make superhero capes that they take home. He's crazy over Spiderman and was Batman for Halloween. We might also make masks from paper plates. We haven't decided on a game yet but we did pin the tail on the donkey without a mask for his younger sister. They don't have any trouble having fun in the house. We shipped our dogs to my folks for 4 hours.

When my boys were little I had to do just what you are doing - make it myself. Well - it turns out - my boys loved it and so did their friends.

One thing that would be really easy to do would be to make each of the children a red cape to wear. Buy very inexpensive red material (either cotton or a felt), red seam binding and yellow and blue felt squares (you can get these with sticky on the back). Cut out a rectangle - a little larger than a dish towel, sew or glue the red seam binding for a cape tie, and then cut out the Big S superman logo out of the felt and stick on.

Let the kids put these on right away when they get to the party, and then they will be off -"whoosh" - flying around in their capes.

Next I would buy plain red paper plates and cups (think Dollar tree or Dollar store), and maybe spring for the Superman napkins. That will give you the most bang for your buck on table decor. Next you could make cupcakes and decorate them forming the Superman S logo - or do the cake that way.

Dollar General I know has Superman candy in little boxes - that are 10 for a dollar. You could get those for treats along with maybe some other candy.

I would create a Kryptonite meteor out of tape (about volleyball size) and spray paint it green. Then play a game of basically "hot potato" - and whoever gets stuck with the Kryptonite at the end of the song gets "weak like Superman would" and has to sit out the next round.

You could make a "Pin the "S" on Superman's cape" game out of again the red material. Make smaller Superman logo's out of felt and let each child have a turn trying to get the "S" in the right place on the cape.

You could have them perform feats of strength and speed (Lifting things - running - flying) Anything to let them play out the fantasy.

Good Luck and happy birthday to your little boy!

Get some big appliance boxes, possibly from an appliance store,

get some one to draw a large superman outline on the box, paint the colors of superman in the outline and paint the sky around it, to make it look like he is flying, cut out the head and have kids put their face in there to make them look like superman.

with more large boxes make them look like buildings so kids can pretend to be lifting buildings like superman

if there is an area of the yard you want the kids to stay away from, paint some rocks green for kryptonite and put them near that area

Here is a sample

Super hero party for my 7 year old son. We had a hard time finding an invitation with the super heros, so I made one. I used folded white cardstock, drew with a black pen a simple skyline of rectangular buildings with windows. Shining in the sky I drew a bat signal. On the cover I wrote "Calling all Super Friends" On the inside I wrote "Come celebrate Ben's 7th year of keeping the planet safe" Date/Time/Place - The Hall of Justice (a.k.a. and wrote our address). While the boys arrived I had a little project for them. They made badges for thier shirts - of the different super hero insignias. I went on cartoon network website and got the logo ideas. A lightening bolt in a circle for Flash, the bat signal for Batman, a lantern for Green Lantern etc, even wonderwoman for my daughter. I made templates out of cardboard. The boys picked one logo and traced it on colored foam craft sheets, and cut them out. They glued them together and let them sit. We then ate pizza for dinner with juice boxes. We used batman plates and napkins and had blue and black streames around the room. Then they were ready for super hero training. Using a stop watch, the boys went one at a time - leaping over tall buildings (fisher price house), crawling through a tunnel, running faster than a speeding bullet. We did this at least twice, each boy trying to better his own previous time. Then they received their badges, taped to the front of their shirts, and masks for their eyes, bought at the party store ($1.00 each). They each received a balloon that we had previously blown up (and had in another room until ready for them). They each drew "bad guy" faces with a marker on their ballon and punched them around etc, eventually popping them. We also played getting the bad guy. After spreading out an old sheet - we let 2 boys at a time each have a can of silly string. They were not allowed to spray above the shoulders. They loved spraying each other with the silly string. They were timed, going 20 seconds or so at a time, so that everyone got a chance to do it, going a second time if any left. I think we had 4 cans of silly string for 8 boys. Then we ate cake/icecream and more juice boxes. I made a Flash cake - a round cake, iced white. Then with a square cake, I cut two jagged pieces to look like the top and bottom of a lightening bolt. I set them up against the circle cake, at the top and bottom, they were also iced white. I used yellow sprinkles to color the lightening bolt yellow. I made a lighting bolt on a piece of paper and cut it in half, to create a stencil. The paper covered up the edges of the round cake, so I could make the lightening bolt with yellow sprinkles through the center of the cake. I outlined the bolt in black gel-type icing. After cake we opened presents. We used a large green glittery superball as "kryptonite". When the music stopped and you were holding the kryptonite your present was opened. (This helped a lot as everyone wanted their gift opened first). This pretty much took up the 2 hours. I may have planned one more game - too much time in between activities and a lot of wrestling begins to happen. For the party bags we bought batman bags. We filled it with the masks, badges they made, can of silly string (K-Bee toys seemed to have the best deal) and candy. The silly string seemed to be a big hit. The boys all had a good time and my son loved it.
