i've been a vegetarian pretty much all my life so i've gotten a lot of that. to be honest, it really depends on the way they ask me. some people are just curious and aren't trying to criticize or change me and so i'm fine with that & i explain my reasons. if they ask in a critical or rude way then i just say "because i want to be".

I have never had anyone try to tell me that I should not be a vegetarian. I think because when I tell them all of the reasons why I am one, I am very confident and informed in my response. They tend to respect my decision when I can show that I have been thoroughly educated. Until you are at that point where you can defend your decision from all angles: religious, environmental, moral, economic, humanitarian, health, etc., you should go with a more general response. "It works for me" or "I'm trying it out" work well. Something that doesn't generate too many questions. Most important piece of advice - be confident in your decision and no one will second guess you.

I don't mind when people ask me. I think people are just naturally curious. If your not sure what to answer then just say, " It just feels like the right choice for me at this time."
If people try to argue with you or try telling that you are wrong to be vegetarian, just say, "It's my personal choice. If you want to eat meat that is your choice."

I'm not a vegetarian. I LOVE meat, unfortunately. I wish I could be like you. Being a vegetarian is much more healthy. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

just think of a generic answer to tell them. i'm not a veggie but i do have tattoos and you wouldn't believe how often people ask "why would a pretty girl like you want to get that all over you" and the like. just say "because i like veggies and i hate meat" or just say "i'm allergic to a lot of things and this is the best thing for me" OR just say "none of your business" or "why did you get that hair cut? because you wanted to? wow, what a coinsidence"

Don't try to explain it. Maybe you need more time to explain it to yourself. Wait till you feel grounded in your vegetarianism/veganism and then answer their questions, in your own way.
My son's new answer to "You're a vegetarian? You mean you don't eat meat?" is "Yeah, freaky isn't it?". And they don't ask him anything more. Of course he is such a cool dude that nobody bothers him.
It is my contribution to the peace I want to see in the world, is my answer lately.

I take it as a great opportunity to explain the myriad reasons for my veganism. Ethical, environmental, health, you name it.
I could talk about it for hours - backed up by facts.
If it's simply a personal decision for you and you don't want to talk about it, simply say "that's personal".
If you want to encourage others, but don't want to get involved in a big conversation, refer them to one of the websites below.
Congrats on such a great lifestyle choice! Way to go!

YOU MEAN YOU EAT NO MEAT....WHY? That's the question of my life.Yes i really hate when people ask me that Q. It is hard to get into detail of why when I didnt really know exactly why. It just grosses me out to eat something that used to surround bones, something that was running around at one point..ewww yuk...lol, I then they start to think how Gross it really is, especially when i point out the veins in chicken legs, now that is really gross. Don't ya think.

I certainly don't mind and I'm happy to explain my reasons for choosing not to consume/use animal products, but it's not like I sit around hoping someone will ask me about it.
