I want to clean & use my grandmother's silver platters for Thanksgiving. I've never used them before--does one put a doily under the food? thanks!

Once cleaned they need to be washed with a strong detergent (washing up liquid) solution, then rinsed well and dried whilst still warm.

Avoid acidy foods like lemons, pickles etc directly in contact with the silver, ordinary foods are quite OK on silver, after all a Silver Goblet or Tankard is about the neatest drinking vessel there is.

And of course with real silver cutlery you eat off of and with them.

You will know when the silver is clean enough when when you lightly rub it with a clean cloth, no black comes off.

You can put a doily under the food. But if you are serving like the turkey, don't worry about anything. When you get through washing the platters, be sure to dry them completely. Then let them sit to air dry.Don't allow anyone to scour the platters, that take away the silver.Have a great Thanksgiving..

We have used our 'silver serving' pieces for Thanksgiving numerous times. We never use 'doilies'. Think about it, hot turkey on paper doilies??? Or a cranberry dish served over 'paper doilies???What a mess.
The nice silver serving dishes and platters make the dinner very elegant.

I line the platter with green leaf lettuce, just so it doesn't touch the bottom, no matter how clean the platter is. Plus, it looks elegant!

I have not heard of any warnings about eating off of silver. Just make sure it is clean.
