THYROID patients remain overactive in the first few years. Thyroid treatment is very effective by taking medicines only and occassionaly the doctor would take out water by syringe from the neck region, where the thyroid is swollen. I believe this is the case and there would be no reason for operation until Doctor tests the affected portion for any abnormality.

While I am unaware of an actual CURE, an effective TREATMENT is the prescription Synthroid, in the lowest possible dose that still increases thyroid function to within the normal range.

Some of the consequences of taking the incorrect dose are more relevant to younger, pre-menopausal women, but there are others that may specifically affect her, including:

Cardiovascular function, bone metabolism, cognitive function, emotional state, gastrointestinal function, and changes in glucose and lipid metabolism.

For this reason, it is important to have her doctor monitor her thyroid function through blood tests, once every 3-6 months. CAREFUL dose adjusment is necessary to make sure she is taking the correct amount.

Also keep in mind that since she is elderly, she may be on other medications which may affect her thyroid funtion &/or interact with Synthroid. I hope this helps!
