It may lower it but it also may speed it up too. Norvasc has both side effects. Both are considered to be adverse side effects of this medication and should be monitored closely.

Important information

Before taking Norvasc, tell your doctor if you have congestive heart failure or liver disease.
Drinking alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and may increase certain side effects of Norvasc.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using Norvasc even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.
Norvasc is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include diet, exercise, weight control, and other medications. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely.
Tell your doctor about all other heart or blood pressure medications you are taking.
Your chest pain may become worse when you first start taking Norvasc or when your dose is increased. Call your doctor if your chest pain is severe or ongoing.

I don't know about that, but I was on Norvasc some years back. What I do know is that it can cause fluid retention in a significan percentage of women. My doctor put me on LASIX to get rid of the fluid, and LASIX is damaging to the kidneys.

Then I got a new doctor who couldn't believe it! He threw both of them away and put me on Zestril for my BP.... and it works great with no side effects.

So if you start swelling, make sure your doctor knows that the Norvasc causes it in women and to change your medication. Don't let them just give you diuretics because they are damaging to the kidneys, especially with long-term use.

Good Luck!
Sue

Norvasc has little to no direct effect on heart rate. It's called a "calcium channel blocker". Other drugs in the class (verapamil, diltiazem, etc) effect the heart rate. If it DID effect the heart rate, it would LOWER it.

Your heart rate may be high for other reasons.

Final answer...

Talk to your doctor about your concerns.
