My mother is also an insulin dependent diabetic. She had a cataract removed this morning but she is refusing to eat proper meals and has also not taken her insulin before her evening meal as her blood sugar was low. She has just had a tiny amount of pudding as her evening meal.
I don't know what the doctors at the hospital have told her regarding the aftercare of her operation but this does not sound right to me.
As a diabetic she needs to have regular meals and it's imperative that she takes her insulin.
Can any experts on the subject advise me regarding this matter?

Thank you.

Well she didn't need to take her insulin before she ate if her sugar was low. She should have ate something sweet to bring it up to normal then ate a good dinner with some insulin. a diabetic needs to eat 3 meals a day with about 60 grams of carbohydrates with each meal. With the eye care, it should be fine by the next day. I just had eye surgery a week ago today and my eye is now better, it was better the next day. After my eye surgery I was able to do anything that i needed to do including eating.

People with type 1 diabetes need insulin even if they do not eat.

Your Mom probably just doesn't feel like eating.Ask the doctor for specific recommendations.

Having cataracts removed should have no effect on your mother's eating/appetite. Nothing at all. They don't even put you to sleep for the procedure. Just a mild tranquilizer in some cases. You need to get her blood tested and if she needs insulin, you need to just give it to her. If her blood sugar is very low--you KNOW she's not thinking correctly. She'll feel better after the insulin. Trust me. She will only be mad for a second. STICK HER!

I would call her doctor. They should be able to help you out. I would ask for a nurse and explain the situation to them.
