First thing I have sleep apnea and it is simply treated with a device called a CPAP !

NOW !!! Sleep apnea simply means stopping breathing more than so many times, for a specific length of time, during a given period of time.

We go to sleep but never go into what is called REM sleep where our brain really gets its rest! For probably the past 40+ years I was not truly sleeping! I denied that I had a problem, I really wasn't tired. But, my wife finally convinced me. She deserves a gold Star, Probably a Congressional Medal of Honor! I am a Hard Headed 61 year-old I'm afraid that I was extremely hard on her! She no doubt has saved my life and no words will ever be able to thank her enough. After all I WAS ASLEEP. ALL WAS OK AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED!!! How do I know what quality sleep I encounter, when I am asleep!

In the "usual" cases apnea is caused by blockage of the airway. This blockage is caused frequently by the collapse of the airway thus a positive air pressure is applied to "inflate" this airway. A Constant Pressure Air device CPAP is prescribed. It will furnish air at a specific pressure measured in inches of water that will be / or has been prescribed from the sleep lab session. The pressure in inches of water, where your brain goes into REM (for rapid eye movement) pattern on the EKG. This is the ideal pressure!

They will set up the machine for you. Don't worry it will all go smooth. I promise that soon you will get use to the CPAP machine PROBABLY even love it! If you live up North, you can always bundle yourself underneath tons of blankets and breath. Kinda like breathing underwater!

This will be a good adventure for you! You will feel better overall I promise regardless of any other conditions that you might have!

Main thing is that you do go to a SLEEP CLINIC FOR A EVALUATION!

NOT TO BE UGLY BUT MY "PND" STANDS FOR POST NASAL DRIP!

I DO HAVE SOME INITIALS THOUGH .... "RLS" FOR RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME IT DISTURBS YOUR REM SLEEP ALSO JUST LIKE SLEEP APNEA DOES AND KEEPS YOU FROM GETTING QUALITY SLEEP!

SLEEP APNEA CAN RARELY CAUSE DEATH!

PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!

APS

It's called obstructive sleep apnea. When you fall asleep the tissue in the back of your throat is obstructing your airway and you stop breathing. The body's natural response is to wake you up so you will breathe again. Often, this is found in people who are overweight. They have excess tissue in their neck so it causes a blockage when you relax your head and neck with sleep. There is a treatment for this. You need to get an appt. with a sleep lab at a hospital. This is the only way you can get the problem diagnosed. They will hook you up to several monitors and you go to sleep, as you normally would, in a nice bedroom setting. When you stop breathing, the monitors sound an alarm to the technician and if it's severe they wake you up. If your apnea is severe enough, you will go home with a CPAP machine which is a mask you wear over your nose while sleeping hooked up to a machine that forces air through your airway and you can finally get some good sleep. Millions of people use this. I do. It's great to sleep throughout the night. It is important you take care of this soon. People die from this e.g., John Candy, the comedian or worse, go into congestive heart failure.

Sounds like sleep apnea. You need to seek help from a sleep specialist. You'll have to have a sleep study done. Which means you will sleep with wires and such attached to you and those will measure your breathing during sleep - how much air you take in during sleep, etc.

sounds like sleep apnea...call your doctor. They may have you go for a sleep study. There is a machine out that the doctor may prescribe for you.
