Diabetics get high blood sugar levels from time to time, when there isn’t enough insulin in the body to allow sugar to be absorbed into a red blood cell the sugar molecules attach to the outside of the cell, and because a red blood cell lives four to six months, and a diabetic will have several high blood sugar levels during the life of a red blood cell… well, they lose elasticity because they are basically candy-coated blood cells.
