Hi I have recently noticed in so many food items the use of emulsifier E471 and after surfing I have mixed opinions of people.some believe it as vegetarian some consider it as core animal fat. I am vegetarian and found of so many products which contain the above emusifier..so pls tell me the fact about this emulsifier especialy emulsifier E471.

Stearic glycerides. Closely related to soft soap, chemically. Stearic acid is the classic hard fat that makes pork lard and beef dripping. I think you could get it from palmnuts too, but I expect the ingredient manufacturers are using rendered animal fat as the source. The bakers will then buy the emulsifier as a synthetic product without wondering what it was synthesised from, and pass it off as vegetarian without necessarily knowing it is not. If you are a strict vegetarian it would be best to avoid it.
If you were baking at home you wouldn't expect to see E471 in the recipe, so why should you buy food that you wouldn't cook for yourself, if you could?
