The obvious answer is with a spoon. As a Sasanach I prefer my porridge sweetened with sugar or syrup.

If I'm in a hurry I eat my porridge standing up. If I'm not in a hurry I eat it sitting down. After it's cooked I add brown sugar, and vanilla rice milk to make it less dull. I prefer to cook it on the stove as I think it tastes better than microwaved. According to a porridge web site traditions and myth surround the making of porridge, some say that the oatmeal should be added in batches, some say at the beginning, and some say it ought to be added half way through the cooking to produce a nuttier flavor and an interesting texture. Me I just add it at the beginning with the water and salt and I let it over cook. Happy eating.

I have eaten porridge for some years, having tried the Scots way of sprinkling with salt and several other ways I prefer now to put some honey into it and stir it in, this is quite a pleasant taste as well as the ingrediants of the honey are good for the body , read up on honey benifits to health, the porridge slowly breaks up and helps to keep hunger away preventing snacks and thereby fattening so stick with it

I love the taste of plain, regular porridge. I make it with milk rather than with plain water, though. It gives it a better flavor. Just add a little salt as well, and then a little butter that melts in the middle is nice.
For a bit of variation, try sprinkling some cinnamon and sugar on top.

First make it with either all milk or half and half. If you are worried about weight and cholesterol then use skimmed or semi skimmed milk.
Before cooking add half a thinly sliced banana and stir in. Stir in again at halfway stage.
Another is stir in half a teaspoon of honey. Half is quite enough as the flavours are then suttle. Or sprinkle on when cooked, some ground nutmeg. Not too much though as it could spoil the effect. The aroma you get is wonderful.
Do not add salt as it is bad for you as is sugar.

First you get some on a spoon.
Then bring spoon to mouth in an upwards swing movement.
Open your mouth when spoon is almost level.
Guide the spoon into your mouth.
Close mouth around spoon, then withdraw the spoon.

salt and a bit of milk. But remember, the correct way is to have the milk in a cup and dip the spoonful of porridge in. Beware of the "Englified" version of pouring the milk on top which makes it like snotters.

i read thru the answers, coming from Asia, porridge in our culture is made of rice cook with lots of water to give a runny consistency.
Just for info, we normally eat our porridge with steam or fried fish and vegetables, soya sauce or soup on the side (chicken, fish or vegetable). Some eat it with salted fish or salted eggs, while others eat it with peanuts and fried baby anchovies.

I make it with Soya milk (try to keep off dairy) and add a teaspoonful of honey to sweeten it - yummy!!! Did you know porridge can seriously reduce your cholesterol? So it has many benefits.

I like my porridge with extra milk, so it is more runny than stoggy. I also add loads of raisins, makes it a lovely breakfast then!
