Best idea always is to consult a physician first for the best solution...

You could try mucinex (an OTC med that breaks up mucus), increase fluid intake (but not caffeinated), and use a humidifier.

Congratulations on quitting smoking!

I'm a nurse and I know a simple way that will work. What you can do is to take three or four deep breaths. You may start to cough, but that's okay because your body is getting rid of the mucus. Do this a couple of times an hour and start taking short walks (not too long if you're getting over something) and you should start feeling better. Part of what your lungs do is to expel the gunk you breathe in. When you're sick or you smoke your lungs don't have the opportunity to do their job.

Now by meds I don't know if you mean a prescription or OTC. There is a new OTC medication call musinex ( i think that's the way its spelled) to help remove excessive mucus. But if you had been sick it will clear up on its own, if it was from smoking that can take alot of time. My Mom quit smoking and coughed for at least 6 months. Good Luck KG

I got some thing called Lung Support or something like that from the health food store. It is all natural, and helps to keep lungs clear and healthy. It helped me quite a bit actually, when i was congested... I think that is the name for it..... But i do know that if you go to a health food store (not GNC), one that is individually owned not these big chains..... i am sure you can get a really good product for yourself, ask a person who works there.... usually they are great help at suggesting brands etc.

There are deep-breathing machines that you can get at medical supply stores. They look like mini-respirators and are usually plastic. It'll basically act as a plunger on your lungs and the deeper you breathe, the better it works. Exercise will also help, but your lung capacity may be pretty restricted at first.

Anything with "expectorant" written on the box is made to break up mucus and help you cough to get rid of it.
