I have edema in my lower legs & ankles. My Dr put me on Lasix. I drink lots of water every day. I TRY to drink half of my body weight in water every day bit sometimes fall short of that goal. I do however drink at least 64 oz every day.
I am now on day 5 with the Lasix & am still seeing some swelling in my ankles. I drink coffee. Probably too much coffee each day. Does anyone know if this is not a good idea to do when you have edema? The reason I ask is because I am not real clear on how this edema thing is working. I think my body may be storing extra water because I am becoming dehydrated, which is probably not helped by the caffeine in the coffee. But caffeine is a diuretic, isn't it? So it should pull the water off too. However, it seems to be making it worse. Is that possible???

Yes, coffee is a diuretic, and I think it is the caffeine which has that effect. I think you should consult your physician about this -- perhaps something like Gatorade would help keep you hydrated, without adding to the edema.

Caffeinated products such as coffee and tea could have a diuretic affect depending on how much you are drinking. Has anyone talked to you about the amount of salt you are consuming? Salt can increase water retention. Also, someone should have warned you about danger of Potassium loss. You can prevent excess loss of potassium by eating bananas and other potassium rich foods. Also, if the swelling is in lower legs and ankles you might find walking more which increases blood circulation will also help move the fluid away from that area. Most important is to drink plenty of water and reduce salt intake. Make a return visit to doctor if you are not doing better or not feeling well. You can't be too careful.

Smoking and caffeine both cause vasoconstriction (shrinking of the blood vessels) that could cause edema in the lower extremities. My question to you is why are you drinking so much fluid? better talk to your doctor about fluid intake---i just can't imagine why a doctor would put you on lasix and tell you to consume half your body weight in water unless there is an unusual reason (i only know one)----please be sure to clarify this with your Dr.

Don't know the practices of Ramadan, but do know that the American Indian had many religious practices that were possibly unhealthy. During Lenten season, and other times various Christian denominations engage in fasting which may/may not be a health hazard. The Jews have their own practices that I'm sure would be questionable to the non- believer. As for me, if I were to fast as an offering to God I'm sure God would take charge and keep the ticker going (he would quite possibly allow for a little discomfort) However, it is not for us to judge nor berate another's true religion (proper conversion is acceptable though). Other than that, "Live and Let Live" and God Bless us everyone.
