Run the hottest possible water in your shower to make "fog" in the bathroom. Sit with your daughter AWAY FROM THE WATER and let her inhale the steam to loosen up the cough. Also, plenty of fluids. Warm tea with honey is soothing...sometimes the cough is worse because the throat is so irritated. Glad you are taking her to the doctor. Meanwhile, please keep an eye on her temperature, and give children's strength Tylenol for fever over 100.8. (NEVER give aspirin to a child! Can cause Reyes Syndrome, which can be very dangerous.) Hope your little sweetie feels better soon. :-)

If it is a dry cough, meaning no congestion - she is not coughing anything up and her breathing is not affected - has she had the sniffles? Have you tried a cold medicine to dry up her sinus'? Her sinus' could be draining down her throat causing the cough.

The hot bath is great if it is a croup(y) cough. But she doesn't have to be IN the bath, just in the bathroom with lots of steam for 20-30 minutes. And if it's the croup, your younger ones will be getting it any minute. I never had any luck with vapo rub and the vaporizer I only used in conjunction with other remedies as an aid.

If her throat is sore Hot lemonade with a spoonful of honey can soothe it and provide some relief.

Be careful of the cough medicine you use with a 7 year old, if you are CERTAIN there is no chest congestion you can use a suppressant but if there is congestion you are better off using an expectorant.

An expectorant will help loosen congestion to allow a child to get it out of the lungs - check to see what kind of cough medicine you were giving her.

Hope this helps - I have 3 healthy (at the moment) kids, 21, 19 & 12 (knock on wood).

It could be post nasal drip. The mucus from her nose might be dripping into
her throat and making her cough. This would sound like a dry cough. Did
the cough medicine have a decongest in it? If not you might try something
that does. good luck. good idea to see doc in am.

Do you have the heat on? She may be too warm for her--try having her breathe cool/cold air--open the freezer door and let her breathe in. Then have her keep sipping water or tea with honey in it. I have asthma, and heated air is really hard on me--makes me hack! If you do have the heat on, turn it down--it just makes it harder. Good luck. If she doesn't slow down, you might consider taking her to the ER--it is very scary and exhausting to not be able to stop coughing. Definately do so if she can't catch her breath!

Strep! Sounds a lot like the typical symptoms. Have your Dr do a swab and send it in, should have the results in a day or two. In the meantime, you could alternate between infant tylenol and infant Advil to ease the pain. If it is Strep, they'll give her a course of antibiotics.

If you sense that she has an urgent condition, you could even take her to the ER. It's probably just a cold or a flu, but I'd keep an eye on it.

If she is in serious distress, it is time to get her to the emergency room. It is possible that she has asthma, but that is a determination for a doctor to make. Better to be safe than sorry!
