surely you know what the damage will be. I smoke occasionally and know that it's not good for me. I smoke because I enjoy it and will probably stop when the law comes in next year to stop smoking in bars. I think that the benefits of smoking are almost immediate: after 20 minutes your blood pressure returns to normal, after 12 hours you can breathe better and after 72 hours you can taste and smell better. Try it and see if you like it - who knows "not smoking" could be the "new smoking".

Half an hour ago I was in hospital visiting my dad who collapsed today. Just found out he has lung disease through smoking and I'm devastated as I don't know if he will get through this. Stop now. I did, so did my husband and you will live a happy healthy life. Not only will you suffer if you carry on smoking but so will your children/family.

Smoking MAY cause many of the following problems, especially if combined with obesity and/or poor circulation:
Smoking may cause lung cancer, nearly 98% of lung cancer patients are smokers.
Smoking may cause emphysema, or other respiratory ailments.
Smoking, with obesity aids in creating cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and arteriosclerosis.
And finally, smoking does not only help kill yourself but also the people you smoke around. Second hand smoke is purported to be almost as bad as smoking.

The more you smoke, the more you are increasing the risk of lung cancer or other smoking related conditions. If I were you, I'd give up before it's too late. I know how it feels to be on the receiving end of someone who deteriorates from chronic smoking. GOOD LUCK!

Plus there is the danger of second hand smoke which can lead to the above listed ailments in innocent bystanders. In addition, cigarettes contain nicotine which is an addictive substance.

I'm thinking you're asking because you're thinking of quitting?

I quit, smoked for 3 years or so, wasn't easy at all. Helped with some practice, quitting a few times and all.

Smoking really doesn't kill as quickly as all the media puts it out to I guess, but it is pretty bad for cholesterol, cardiovascular fitness and even sperm count. Heard or a guy who smoked a cigarette brand with really bad quality control for their menthol filters, and died instantly. Dunno if that's urban legend though! Makes for a scary image I'll tell you that much.

According to the Red Cross:
Each year, 390,000 American die from the effects of smoking.
Cigarette smokers have more than twice the risk of heart attack.
Cigarette smokers have two to four times the chance of cardiac arrest.
Giving up smoking rapidly reduces the risk of heart disease. After a number of years, the risk of heart disease diminishes to the same level as a person who has never smoked.
A pregnant woman who smokes increases her baby's chances of infant crib death.

Smoking contributes to erectile dysfunction, macular degeneratoin leading to blindness, tooth loss, gingivitis, and loss of memory and abliity to function, it causes inflammation in the body which makes the smoker age more rapidly, is that enough?

Well 1st of all your lungs deteriorate. 2nd your gums/teeth start to go bad and you have to have periodontal work. You could get COPD Cronic OBSTRUCTIVE Pulmonary Disease. Congestive heart failure's next. I've been smoking since I was 14 and am now 50. I quit March 15th of this year because my fiance', now husband was diagnosed with COPD & CHF. He has trouble walking short distances- has to wait to catch his breath etc. You could also get emphysema or lung cancer, mouth or throat cancer. Is that enough?
