There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Herpes, whether genital or oral, is not passed by casual contact. You can not get it from sharing a glass, touching the same object or by using the same toilet seat. The herpes virus is contained in the sores. The virus is spread when a sore comes into contact with another person's mucous membranes--genitals, mouth/lips or eyes.
More importantly, how do you know that your co-worker has herpes? Unless someone tells you that they have herpes there is no way for someone like a co-worker to know that they have it. If you believe that your co-worker has genital herpes, you are not at risk unless you have sex with him/her. And, if you are referring to oral herpes, cold sores, you are not at risk unless you kiss him/her. And, the majority of Americans have oral herpes and most get it as children through non-sexual means. And, did you know that 1 in 5 Americans, that's 20%, have genital herpes? Did you also know that there is not test for herpes unless you have sores and then those sores are cultured? Hence, people can have herpes and not know it unless they have ever had any sores because the virus can be present but may never produce sores. Lastly, what if you or your co-worker were health care providers? For instance, I am a health care provider at a family planning clinic and many of my patients have herpes--if herpes was transmitted through casual contact as you are concerned than any one in health care would have it, then we would all have it..and we don't because it is sexually transmitted.

I was tested positive for herpes approximately six years back, when I was in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I suppose many of girls will say this but I swear I never did that sort of thing. I jud made a mistake that one time and, suddenly, it seemed like I was going to have to live with the problem for the rest of my life. The worst part was thinking I would never date guys again. After all, who wants to date a woman who has blisters around her you-know-what? But after a good friend showed me this video https://tr.im/HerpesCuresgZ9 everything has changed. Not only was I able to remove all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than fifteen days, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so happy to say that just last week, in front of many people in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This program gave me back the chance to be happy, and to experience true love.

depends what you do with that person;) but generally, NO! you can get herpes (im guessing your talking about having a cold sore) from kissing someone who has a cold sore thats broken out. but by just being next to that person wont give you herpes. if he has a cold sore dont use the same glass to drink from or share chapstick, things like that. But if you know they have the Herpes Virus in them, thers no reason to be scared, almost 90% of human kind has it (have you ever had a cold sore? if yes, then you also have it). its harmless, just gives you that nasty blister every once in a while.
so dont worry about getting herpes from your friend. you cant gett it by touching things that he touched.

From my knowledge, you can only get herpes from physical contact i.e. touching the affected area (can be mouth in some cases). But herpes cannot live outside the body i.e. on a desk. Check with a doctor or someone with a medical degree.

No! Herpes is a strain of the chicken pox virus, but is not transmitted as easily. It's the cause of coldsores and/or genital herpes, but they can only be passed on by intimate/direct contact. If he's got them in his mouth or around his lips I wouldn't share his coffee mug, but that's not something I'd do with colleagues anyway so really you've no worries, chill out and let him worry about it!
