Registered Nurse Here; The ANSWER IS A GREAT BIG YES! As soon as one stops smoking, short time, like in 24 hours the lungs began to clean and repair themselves. The person that wrote in 10 years it's like you never smoked is correct and as she stated, unless disease process was already present. Let me elaborate on this a little. If Cancer already present probably wouldn't benefit one much to stop smoking at this point, actually it would depend on the stage of the Cancer. As for as Bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, one can certainly expect improvement immediately from the later two diseases with the cessation of smoking. Thanks for the opportunity to address such an important and well written question.

I believe that reality denial is a very powerful drug. It is free and universally available. It is slightly more effective than your proposed remedy. Levels of dosages: 1. There is no problem 2. There is a problem but it is not significant. 3. There is a significant problem but nobody can do anything about it. 4. There is a significant problem which other people can do something about but I can't. Congratulations on quitting smoking. I hope that you can continue to stay clean. The best therapy for your lungs at this point is to start on aerobic exercises, but start slowly and gradually increase the load. Your lungs are damaged at this point and you need to treat them with care.

After a person stops smoking in like 10 years their lungs will be clean and healthy again. As long as they weren't like dying to begin with.

not physically - but it will purge a lot of itself out except for the really sticky portions which stick to your lung linings. This will take 10-20 years depending on how long you smoked.

If I recall right.....for every year you smoke, it takes 3 years to remove that tar naturally by the body.

In old days they use to give weed/pot to people with lung cancer or black lung (coal dust in lungs) to help break up the tar as weed/pot smoke is a higher burn temperature and helps loosen up the tar. Will case coughing which also breaks it up.

Hot showers beating on the chest help some as well.....do similar to above...helps break it up some.
