I had Fugu in Japan. The important thing is to make sure the sushi chef is skilled and reputable. The wrong cut and you're done.

Just a heads up, from someone who's had it -- it's really nothing to write home about. I think the thrill is in the danger, because it's definitely not in the taste. It's pretty bland, and the texture isn't great.

IF it's properly prepared, the risk is lower than when you cross the road ...! (Most of the people who die have prepared it themselves...! MOST - not all!)

But the fact that the chef would lose his license and be prosecuted if he/she killed you wouldn't be much comfort after the fact, would it?!!

Think about it seriously - every day there are people eating fugu, and almost ALL of them have no problems .... BUT ...!
; )

BTW, it's NOT the skin that's toxic - it's the liver, and maybe some nearby parts of the guts. The problem arises if the fish isn't gutted properly ... can you imagine the poison oozing from a damaged liver and contaminating the flesh...?!!!

Since you can die from this why bother? It has to be done by a skilled licensed chef to prevent that from happening and even so people around the world still die from eating it.

While it can kill you if the person prepared it the wrong way, there is an extremely small percentage of people actually dying from it. It just sounds scarier than it really is.

You can die if not properly prepared. The traces of toxins left that you eat can actually numb your mouth like when you go to the dentist!

i dun think it's really worth taking the risk... think about it... i think what really makes ppl want to try it, is the fact that:

"OMG! it's such a rare delicacy! and it's poisonous too!"

the thrill of trying something weird and exotic can sometimes be a bad thing. but the decision is really up to you...

Could this be a reflection of your impending marriage (opportunity to die beforehand?).

If its for the 'thrill', try bungy-jumping, if its for the taste.... don't bother.

It's a 50:50 chance.

If you get the poison, don't worry, it's almost instantaneous.

You won't feel a thing.

Of course, don't forget to write your Will.

And name your nominee for the other things.
