Do you feel fine otherwise? Has it ever happened before? Or did you just have a nightmare that freaked you out that you were waking up from? Take your temperature and go to the doc if you continue to have problems. It could be sleep apnea, but I'd be surprised that's it if it's never happened before and was a one time thing.

It aounds like sleep apnea of which my mother suffers from, although I am nowhere close to a doctor this is the closest thing I can think of...I know when she is in deep sleep she doesn't get air so she wakes up to breathe. This can be deadly please get it checked out.

That used to happen to me a lot when i was younger, i would go to sleep, and then wake up breathing like crazy...I found out that i wasn't breathing in my sleep due to overweight-ness. So i lost weight. :P
