A crystal of menthol in a bowl of steaming water. Cover your head and the bowl of water with a large towel and breathe the steam for about 5 minutes. WARNING> DO NO go outside for at least 20 minutes after doing this!

It sounds like you could be facing a sinus infection if you aren't able to breathe right.

Massage your forehead, sides of forehead, above the eyes, gently below the eyes, gently on sides of nose and surrounding cheek areas about the nose.

Apply a little eucalyptus essential oil or Vicks Vaporub below the nostrils.

Boil water and turn off heat; bend head over pan to inhale the steam rising from it.

Get into hot shower to allow steam to open sinuses.

Elevate head in bed.

Open window a crack in bedroom to allow fresh air in.

Dust ceiling fans in house as dust can irritate sinuses.

Purchase over-the-counter saline nasal spray which is
water with salt, and this cleanses the nostrils.

Avoid smoke and indoor air pollution.

You can obtain an adaptor for a Waterpik (used on gums
and teeth) which can be used to cleanse the nasal passages.

Drink hot tea or coffee.

Fresh air is important so be sure to get fresh air daily frequently.

If you work in stuffy office, buy a humidifier and use one to moisturize the air, and also in your bedroom.

Heater use in winter drys the air and irritates the nose.

Lastly, should this become a chronic problem, consult an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist doctor as you could have a deviated septum.

Good luck!

As well as inhaling steam, Vicks, Olbas oil etc, eating a moderately hot curry or chilli always works for me. Try not to blow your nose till it's actually runny (sorry I know that sounds ewww) because otherwise you'll end up with a red nose. If you have to blow your nose frequently, use tissues with balm in them, or rub a bit of vaseline on the outside of your nose to stop it getting sore.

If you decide to blow your nose at any time, never blow both nostrils together. Press a finger against one nostril to close it, and then gently blow down the other one. Repeat for the other side.
