The diabetes needs to be gotten under control immediately!!! You need to eat 4-6 SMALL meals per day--good protein, veggies and fruit. Watch your sodium intake (especially be cautious of processed foods--canned, frozen, etc.-fresh is best). Drink lots of water. Watch your carbs--whole grains are best. Diabetes can cause serious kidney damage, which can cause edema. You're taking a high dose of diuretic--maybe a different one would work better for you.

I am guessing (GUESSING) you are on too many steroids. I am guessing they put you on steroids for a couple of different reasons...one being as an anti-inflammatory for your back to reduce inflammation and pain. The other being for the lung condition, to keep the lungs clear. You have been on them now for a good while at a relatively high dose.

You are now diabetic
You have extreme edema in most parts of your body, but you face is very round and your belly is puffed.

Lasix will not do it...because it is not water retention, it is bloat from steroids.

Now you have to do some research on Steroid therapy and take it to your dr and find out HOW to get off steroids. This includes all the cortisone treatments, the prednisone found in your lung meds, etc.

If you stay on Steroids for long they will KILL YOU. No, the younger drs will not agree. My FIL was a dr from back during WW2. He remembered when steroids made their big appearahce. They were to be used for a short term and only as a last resort. EVEN the dermatologist who treats skin conditions will try a NON steroidal FIRST. Know WHY? BECAUSE for every episode of any condition you use steroids, the NEXT time you will have to use a LARGER DOSE.

The longer you stay on the Steroids the more the sympoms will appear.....
Loss of Vision
Loss of Hearing
Diabetes
Soft bones and easy fracture
suppressed immune system, prone to infection
Cardiac myopathy (enlargement and finally Congestive failure,. sooner or later)

Are you able to be active since your surgery? If not it really doesn't matter that you only eat once a day. Actually it may help to make sure to eat several small meals with lots of fiber. Also some meds will cause temporary weight gain and water gain. Talk to your doc about setting up some type of exercise you can do until you get back on your feet.

Hard to tell just from that. Ask your MD about how your kidneys and liver are working, as those can also cause edema. Usually by combining an echo, a chest x-ray, basic labs, an EKG, and a good old-fashioned physical, you can usually figure out what the cause of the edema is.

Wow! sounds like you are having some serious struggles. have you tried drinking a glass of 100% cranberry juice on a daily basis? Cranberry juice has been known to help with urinary system. Also, if you drink eight or more glasses of water a day, it will help reduce water that you are retaining. Also I have found that taking a B6 tablet also help reduce fluid in the system..

I have no idea what it could be, But I do know if you drink about 3 cups of strong, plain green tea everyday, that will flush a lot of the water retention. You will have to pee a lot, but it should help your situation a bit!
Best wishes, God bless.
