For my son's first birthday we're having a lunch potluck (around noon). There will be about 25-30 adult guests and maybe 5 little children. The theme is going to be "Teddy Bear Picnic".

First... do you think this is appropriate, an ok idea? (I did not want to cook everything for all those people, and setting the time any later will either make a really short party, or cut into my son's naptime and he will be grouchy.)

Second, what should I say on the invitations, that would convey all this in the best, most concise way?

Any other suggestions would be helpful as well... thanks!

It's a Teddy Bear's Picnic - a noontime lunch,
To celebrate (child's name) birthday with his favorite bunch.
Bring a yummy dish to pass and share,
And bring along your own favorite Teddy Bear.
Join us for this very special first birthday,
Thank you for helping celebrate in this way

RSVP by (date) and please let me know what special Teddy Bear treat you plan for us all to eat! I can't wait to see what surprises make up our picnic!

I presume that you are mostly inviting close family and friends so you shouldn't have anyone upset that you are asking for them to bring a dish. Plan some Teddy Bear activities - like a Teddy Bear parade with the kids. Decorate with Teddy Bear stuff - especially the invite and you will be fine.

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY TO YOUR SON!!
PS - Be sure to play the music THE TEDDY BEAR'S PICNIC!

Musical Teddies #1 (like Musical Statues!) Musical Teddies #2 (like musical chairs, but with pictures of teddies for the children to stand on instead!) Pin the Ear on the Teddy (like Pin the Tail on the Donkey!) Pass the Parcel Find the Teddy (hide some small teddies around the room and ask the children to find them) Do you know the game where you draw a spider by throwing numbers on a dice? You could do the same with teddies (1=body, 2=legs, 3=arms, 4=ears, 5=eyes, 6=head) - but it does involve some cutting out for you beforehand! I had a similar party for my son - except the theme was pirates, and I did all the normal party games, but gave them a pirate theme!. I also chickened out and got a magician, to fill some time! I told him what the theme was and he worked it into his show. Excellent - and not as expensive as I thought it would be! He did 45 minutes. Games lasted about 30 minutes and food filled the rest of the time! Good luck - I swore I would never have a party at home (or, indeed, in a hall!) again! Since then, we have done visits to an animal park, laser questing and so on with my son - luckily my daughter loves going to 'adventure' places - you know, the ones with ball pools and climbing stuff!

I think the theme sounds great. Maybe you could do RSVP invites so you know exactly who's coming and what their bringing try sending out invitations with teddy bears saying

Teddy Bear Potluck Party
Please bring one of your fave dishes to share (I will bring {your dish} )What might you bring ( leave your number here)?
Call for questions
Time
Date

Make sure you place your numbers to be reached at in a cpl different places and specify RSVP

Sounds like fun!! Good Luck

Or
You can specify Picnic/Party
saying "Come share a picnic and a very special day , bring a dish"
Possibilities are endless, if your worried about what people will say because you asked everyone to bring a dish (?) DONT anyone who questions all you have to say is that you thought the variety would be nice and you wanted to make sure everyone had something they liked (noones gonna bring something they don't like right?) Again GOOD LUCK!!

On the invites just say: The Teddy Bear Picnic will be from noon to 1, please bring a dish to pass. You could of course have it after your sons naptime and not really need to have much more than finger foods and cake. Then the timing might allow the party to last a little longer.

I personally would not ask for people to bring a dish unless they ask. When I had parties for my kids and adults came we always would do a BBQ or pizza and salad.
