You should not be taking blood pressure when you have no idea how to use it.

You have to listen for the pulse through the stethescope. Put the blood pressure cuff around his upper arm. Place the stethescope on the crook (bend) of the arm. Begin to pump and release when you no longer hear the pulse beating through the stethescope. That's the high number. Release the pump SLOWLY and listen carefully for the return of the pulse beat. When you hear it again, that's the low number.

120/80 is a normal range.

It depends on how high his pressure is... if it is over 160 you have to go up to 180.

Go ahead and start at 180 (which btw, is a little painful). Once you get his pressure, you'll have a better idea where to pump it up to. Just need to pump it up higher than his systolic reading.

BTW, only take the reading once... iow, don't pump it up, bleed it off, then pump it back up for a second check as you'll get inaccurate readings the second time around. You must let the arteries rest for at least 5 minutes between readings.

I would encourage you to go to your doctor's office or a local hospital and ask a nurse to show you how to take a blood pressure correctly. It is really not something that you can pick by just reading a description. Even in nursing school, we have instructors that work with us until we get it right. Otherwise, you really can't be sure you are recording your father's blood pressure accurately and consequently may overlook a developing problem.

If you do not know how to take a blood pressure maybe you should get an electronic one. I have trained alot of people who are becoming nurse and techs and ometime they get it wrong. Sometimes it is hard to hear. Get an electric one and at his next docs appointment bring it with. Have he nurse or doc check his blood presure then do it electronically to make sure it is accurate. Otherwise like the first answer said 180.

Release after 2 pumps where the level indicator does not go any higher,it is different for everyone. There is no one number level that works for everyone,it is just an indicator.
