You need to drink lots of clear fluids, and eat a good diet with good amounts of vitamin and minerals. Take a natural multi vitamin supplement if your diet is not up to par, to keep yourself well.
When you start having cold symptoms take extra zinc and echinacea, these will help boost your immune system and help you get over the common cold fast. Check out this site with lots of healthy living info.

As for your chest congestion, go on out and get some Mucinex tablets at your local pharmacy. The stuff is incredible. Should have it over the counter. It says take one, but on my first dose I always take 2. Within an hour that "boulder" will be off your chest. I swear by the stuff. I also use Sinex nasal spray for nasal congestion(short term) Good luck and I hope you feel better!

If this has been going on for a while and you are coughing up colored spetum then you should probably get to your doc pretty quick.
If you are just a bit congested...try sudacare shower disks...they work very well at clearing up congested chests and noses.
Good luck.
