There are 1780 results in the "search for questions" regarding chest pain and probably every one of them had someone suggesting that you call 911. Read on.

Heart attacks and true cardiac symptoms almost never present as sharp pains (I would have said never but there is probably someone out there who had true cardiac pain that was sharp.) All you have to do on this forum is MENTION chest pain and one or a couple people will insist that you phone 911 or rush to the ER. That is probably not necessary.

You provide no information about your medical history but risk factors for cardiac problems are even more important than your symptoms since the symptoms are unusual. The big five for heart disease are: cholesterol, family history for premature heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking. If you are a woman and under age 40 I imagine you would have to have EVERY risk factor for you to have true coronary disease. Even if this problem is not cardiac and you do have EVERY risk factor then (1) Its time to clean up your act - loose weight, drop the cigarettes and get your blood pressure and cholesterol treated. (2) Talk with your primary doctor about getting a referral to a cardiologist.

Now back to your question - this could be everything and nothing. If you are really ill, use good judgement (short of breath, sweaty, nausea and vomiting, sense of impending doom) and have it evaluated and treated tonight. If this is some sort of minor nagging sensation that just has you concerned, call your primary physician tomorrow and get it evaluated routinely.

A word of caution: just because you go in does not mean that a cause will necessarily be found.

Good luck and be well.

It _could_ be indigestion or bad gas. On the other hand, it could be a sign of problems with your ticker. I'm putting a link to a list of heart attack symptoms below, although they left out two I learned back in first aid class - radiating pains down your arms, and refusal to even consider the fact that you could be having a heart attack.

If these sound like what you're experiencing, you'd better call 9-1-1 ASAP.

If those don't sound like what you're experiencing, there could be lots of other causes, ranging from things that are heart-related to things like sore muscles, heartburn and panic attacks.

Your best bet is probably to call your doctor or advice nurse. They can often ask a series of screening questions over the phone that'll give a you a sense of how urgent the matter is, as well as make arrangements for you to see a doctor.

Chest pains often have benign causes, but they aren't the kind of thing you want to fool with - when people do have heart problems, the sooner they get help, the more of the heart muscle can be preserved. So please do just go ahead and call the doc. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Best of luck to you -
