My son often has problems in the fall with chest congestion but the stuff the doctors give him just don't generally work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

do this in this order...run a hot shower for him as hot as he can handle it, keeping the door closed...after about 15 minutes, do what is called percussions, do light karate chops all up and down his back for about 5 minutes...then have him take about 3-4 deep breaths and he should start coughing up all phlegm...also mucinex is a great over the counter mucous release pill

My son often goes trough the same thing. HIs doctor told me a way to help him in between taking medicine, and it really works! what you do is get your bathroom really steamy by either running a hot shower or the hot water in the sink. Have your son breath in all the steam for a few minutes and then go directly to the freezer for one minute and have him breathing the cold air. Somehow this breaks up some of the congestion. I always do it before bed time, it helps my son sleep better without coughing through the night.

My sister had croup. Which is a chronic cough (whooping cough as it is usually known) and my mother would start the shower and put it as hot as it could go. She would then undress her to her underwear and have her sit in the bathroom until it was so foggy you couldn't seen her hands. Then she would wrap her in a towel and put her outside for 30 seconds and let her deeply breathe in the cool air. It works like a gem. I did this when I got pneumonia.

boil water and vinegar in a 2:1 ratio then stand over it and breathe. It sounds kind of weird, but it does seem to help loosen mucus.

Dectet the cause properly.
Since it happnes in fall, he may have allergy to a specific form of dust, possibly the dead bodies of ticks. Ticks begin to die in fall in your room anywhere. This occasinally cause asthma.
If it is the cause, clean the room throughly as carpet, curtain,,,,/
This works!!

once i was stuck in the cold mountains and woke up wheezing. i drank cups of coffee - the caffeine helped. i think the vapors and hot liquid helps too. ahh, that's what I heard and that's what helped me. he'll grow out of it, i'm sure and he's sure lucky to have a caring mom like you.
