I am hosting a big party for my daughters 5th birthday. We will have around 20 adults in attendance with thier children. The kids will be busy with games, but I don't trust the grown ups to mingle for 2 hours. Last time I tried that it was akward, nobody talked to each other. The party is inside a large one room building, and I would love to have some semi-structured activities for adults as well...any ideas????

Well since it is a party for kids and the adults will be there because of thier kids....One thing you could try to do is have games for the adults to play with they're kids..like relay races, or just fun games everyone can chip in with. Adults should like just to talk...you can't get adults to play games at kids parties it seems to planned. Just have them talk...it may seem akward but you can start up any conversations you need to.

No really, get the parents involved in the games, have a SMALL bar set up with a server, so no one gets drunk
Make introductions your self, try to match up people with the same likes dislikes..private schools vs. public schools..breastfeeding vs bottle feeders, give them some common ground to talk about
like Oh Sue, this is Mary, she is a room monitor at St. Francis, doesn't your son go to St. Christopher..
Play games that have all ages like pictionary, make sure you = the kids and adults on each team

Adults do not need any pre-planned entertainment... they will sit around and talk, IF they even stay. They may drop the kids off and head out for a 2-hour break!

Get the adults involved in the games. Make the games parent and kid team games. Ask some of the parents to assist in the serving of ice cream, cake and drinks etc. And involve the parents in supervising their children.

I've tried this too and it turned out the same way. Nobody knew eachother and nobody was really interested in getting to know eachother. I now opt for drop off parties and just have a few close friends help out.

maybe some games like taboo. but not all adults like those, so just talk about the each others' kids and what is happening at their school.
