H.i.v. is actually quite difficult to contract. A h.i.v. infected white blood cell must get into the recipient's blood stream and then contact that person's white blood cell. Then the virus can transfer to the recipeints white blood cells. The h.i.v. virus is not as contageous as the heptaitis b virus. The latter can infect a recipint person in the virus free form. It does not require the protection of a human cell to survive. Therefor any bodily fluid can transmit the hep b. virus. (e.g. blood cells, (red or white). Blood serun, salive, cerebrospoinal fluid, feces, urine, saliva etc.
Hiv is spread by infdected white blood cells that are present in blood, semen vaginal secretions, saliva, c.s.f. etc. But thaose white blood cells have to get into the recipeint's blood system. Saliva does not usually pass h.i.v. unless the other person has brushed their teeth in the last hour before contactiong infected saliva (which usually does not carry the virus), or semen. Intercourse is a common method of transmission, and an open bleeding vaginal wound, caused by another sexually transmitted disease increases the odds of virus passage. (e.g. chancre, and less often a genital herpes condition, and more rarely still a chlamydial infection. (Chlamydia trachomatis vaginosis). Using shared infected needles for intravenous drug administration is a very efficient way to get the virus. Anal intercourse is also a common disease spreading activity. the anus lining is not armored like the vaginal lining and bleeding and transmission is more likely. (so use a condom, folks).
Transmission through contaminated blood transfusions used to be a common route. But it is very rare, today, due to blood testing for the virus and antibodies to that virus. Incidentally, contracting h.i.v. by giving blood will not result in hiv infection. It never was , because sterile one-use needles were always used, in the developed World, to collect blood.

Nobody has yet discovered the origin of HIV. The leading hypothesis (the last time I checked) was that SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) somehow mutated and crossed from primates (probably chimpanzees) into humans (becoming HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus). This is just a hypothesis, but it seems to be the most supported one. The two types of HIV appear to have originated in two places in Africa from two different species of primates. If this is true, it would have spread early on through people butchering monkeys in the jungles of Africa, and likely through sexual contact with their spouses. The only reason people in the USA think it's a "gay disease" is that it is believed the virus first came to the USA via Europe through a gay man, which introduced it into the gay community, and this is what made the news. Had it spread through the breeder community, I'm sure it would be stagmatized quite differently. However, in the USA, as in the rest of the world, it is now an equal-opportunity pathogen, and isn't restricted to, or largely more prevalent in any particular group of people.

HIV is spread through bodily fluids such as blood and semen, NOT saliva though.

The blood/semen has to get into your bloodstream.
