Not a stupid question.
It isn't fattening, but it is very high in sodium. You can find some that is low-sodium, or that is low in MSG (a salty flavoring often used in Chinese food), and that will be healthier.
In general, I think having the soy sauce is better than not having the veggies. Just watch the amount used, and if your doctor recommends a low-sodium diet, it'll probably have to go.

If you don't add salt to it - it is good and healthy (better than a mayo or any fattening sauce). And the best one is Kikkoman.
To get a different taste of soy sauce - try the teryaki sauce: just add a coffee spoon of sugar and a bit of mirin (sweet sake) - it is excellent with meats.

Recently, there's been an article about soya products in the Guardian. Basically, they were giving soya such a bad name and I was sickened by this. I don't know who or why all this crapp was written about soya when it is a marvellous food stuff. It will NOT make men grow man boobs and it will not do other weird things to womens cycles. Yes, it does have phyto oestrogens but instead of throwing your hormone system out of balance, it balances it. So, for example, if you have oestrogen dominance then it will reduce that and for those who have oestrogen deficiency it can correct that. If soya was such a big problem messing up with testosterone in men then how come that chinese men don't have man boobs? Why do they still have willies? Well, it's bullsh... Soya sauce is good for you and enjoy it with your vegetables! Yummy!!!

It is not fattening but has a very high salt content so you have to be careful you are not overdosing on salt. So in that sense it is unhealthy if you are using it all the time and in large quantities.

I consider it basically liquid salt. I guess it's about the same as sprinkling salt on your vegetables. I don't think it's fattening, but if you have a problem with sodium, you might not want to use a lot of it.

It's extremely high in sodium.
Has some antioxidants.
Does NOT have healthful isoflavones like most other soy products.
Some carcinogenic chemicals (mono and di chloropropane) contained within it are at very unhealthy levels.
Based on what I read it should be used in moderation.

It has a LOT of salt, I know that. So I would not use a lot. Soy Sauce is pretty much "Chinese salt". So if you swell from salt easily do not put more then a tablespoon on your plate.

Soy sauce has a very high sodium (salt) content. If you have salt issues, you should be careful. Other than that, it's good stuff.
