You need to have a C-peptide test done. This test lets you know if your body is still producing any insulin on its own. If there is still some insulin being made, the person is a type II diabetic, if not, they are a type I. Good luck!

It may be difficult, but there are guidelines.
Type I diabetics do not produce enough insulin, so they often are very thing, eat a lot of don't gain weight, and are constantly drinking and peeing. They are at high risk for DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis, a very serious complication of the disease that requires urgent treatment) and any hospital admissions for this in the past suggest type I. They also tend to be younger, though you can be older and a type I, or young and a type II.
Type II diabetics can often produce insulin perfectly well, but require much higher levels than normal people to control their blood sugar. They are often obese, rarely develop DKA (though they may develop a hyperosmolar coma state, which is just as dangerous) and are often older than type I diabetics.

The doctor will know if the person is a type one or a type two patient. Type one diabetes is more commonly found in children so if it is a child, it is a safe guess that they have type one diabetes. Those with type one diabetes have no Insulin being produced by their pancreas while those with type two have a small amount still being produced or their body cells won't absorb the Insulin. Type two is more commonly found in adults but is now being found in teens as well, possibly because of obesity. A child however, normally has type one diabetes.

There's no detection. Diabetics should wear some kind of medical alert device so others will know which type they are.
