I have spit up about 1 tsp on black-tinged phlegm first thing in the morning for the past 4 days. I have a doctor appt in 4 days -- should I try to get in earlier? I don't smoke, don't use drugs, am not a coal miner, haven't been to "Ground Zero" and feel otherwise healthy. Should I be extremely concerned??

I think you should to try to get in sooner, the black color leads me to think perhaps there is blood coming from somewhere and that is never a good sign. Best to treat it ASAP before it gets worse.

Start medicating yourself now. There are a lot of cough and chest congestion medications out there available over the counter. Mucinex is a really good medicine. It's a little pricey, but you only have to take it twice a day and it really works. Don't wait to get to the doctors before you start taking something. Go get yourself some theraflu and some robitussin at least if you want to go the cheaper way.
Hope you feel better.

Where are you from? Where do you work? Lots of things can contribute to black phlegm. I work in a auto repair shop and sometimes the brake dust gets into my nose and mouth and I cough up black stuff for a few days. Poor air quality in the city where you live could also cause the black lung.

Good luck at your doctor's appointment!

could be a lot of things,id try to get in sooner if possible. could be a fungal infection, if it gets worse or you have trouble breathing though make sure you go in right away.

I would go 2 the E.R. asap----this sounds serious. They should give you an x-ray to see what's going on.
