Pleurisy is a horrifically painful condition caused by infection in the pleural lining of the lungs. It presents with symptoms of pain when breathing in and out and some people describe it as "having a catch" in their chest area. For healthy people, pleurisy is relieved in a fairly short duration of time and the person returns to their normal health state afterwards.

Pleurisy is inflammation of Pleura. Pleura is a double layered thin membrane. Inner membrane covers the lungs, outer layer is lined on inside of chest wall. these both layers join each other at the entry of wind pipe into the lung. these layers provide lubrication so that lung can exapand and collapse with breathing. there are many causes such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung infarction (death of a part of a lung usually due to clot obstructing it's blood supply) etc. etc.
