I don't think it's genetic. Vegetarians are usually more adventurous in their food choices than meat eaters and more likely to try things like Thai food, which gets them used to the joys of spicy food. I don't use a lot of hot sauce, but I do love spicy Mexican, Thai, and Indian veg food.

Vegetarians haven't cornered the market on spicy foods. There is alot of spicy foods out there that contain meat. Try not to single out vegetarians as liking spicy foods only.
I think you have to develop a taste for it. My kids did not like spicy veg food, and I still have to watch how much spices I put in the middle eastern dishes and stirfries. (We've been a vegan family for three years, and all together five for being vegetarian).
We have a little spicy Thai food every once in awhile, and the kids are starting to like the spicy Thai. I think it will grow on them as they get older and their taste buds want to explore.
Genetically speaking, your taste buds would be passed on from your parents. Your taste buds seem to not be sensitive to hot things as compared to your parents? or even grandparents?

I think people can develop tastes for different types of foods and spices. I don't think it's hereditary--not too many people in my family care for spicy food or hot sauce--but then I have been exposed to other cultures and their styles of cooking. I think it depends on the person in my opinion. My meat dishes are primarily fish, chicken and turkey--I also eat a lot of vegetables due to being a diabetic.

Good question. Since becoming a vegetarian I do seem to like spicier foods but never made the connection before? Its probably just a coincidence, however.

I became a vegitarian this year on febuary 16 (my 12 birthday). I would say that hot or spicy food is more filling than those of mild or cold food. But I am of asian origin and I had been eating meat since I was born. Well I have also grown up with spicy food!!! :D

I've only been veg for the last year and a half after eating meat my whole life. i think spicy food (especially indian) is more satisfying than mild or bland food, and when i eat something with a lot of heat, i feel more full.
