I've had tofu go bad before the expiration date because it wasn't handled properly at the store (not cold enough) and I've had tofu that stayed good a week and half past the expiration date. The best way to tell is to open it and smell it. And personally, if you want, you can still cook it and eat it. Fermented tofu will not hurt you if you cook it properly. Personally, I can't stand the smell of tofu turned sour, so I won't cook it and stink up my whole kitchen with the smell.

The expiration date is merely a sale by date! In the US (as a rule) it would as a minimum be set to one week before time to chunk it assuming proper storage conditions (and all that applies only to 'standard' water pack tofu). For aseptic packaged tofu (sometimes called shelf stable) the date is set at 2 years after the date of manufacture (again in the US). Water packed tofu can be safely kept in the fridge (between 40-45 degrees F.) for up to two months beyond that date assuming weekly changes of the water followed by tightly resealing the package.

I would not advise trying to eat anything, AFTER the expiration date, as the date is an incidicator of when its still SAFE to eat.
