Most miso soups are not vegetarian. You *can* buy vegetarian miso soups (look in the natural food section at your grocery store, or if you have a trader joe's, wild oats, whole foods or similar store). Traditionally miso soup either has a chicken stock or fish stock base and may have flakes of dried fish (bonito) in it. Since chicken and fish are animals, this would make it not vegetarian.

If you are vegetarian, then it's best to avoid it while dining out. Many Asians incorrectly consider fish as vegetarian, so even if you ask, they may say yes. And, the servers may not know what's in it. They'll just lie because it's what you want to hear, but then you may find chunks of chicken or fish flakes in it, or you may get sick later from the meat content. In the grocery store, simply read the ingredients.

Like a few others said, most miso at Japanese restaurnts are not vegetarian because of bonito and fish broth. One of the easiest ways to tell if it has bonito is if it smells smoked. But even if it doesn't you should ask if it has a dashi or fish broth.

You can get some dry packets that are vegetarian and you can make your own veggie miso.

SOME MISO SOUP IS!!!!! It really does depend on the brand of miso because some have bonito flakes in it. Bonito is a type of air and fire dried fish that has been made into light fish shavings. So it is only the miso soup that has no bonito shavings in it that is vegetarian.
