There are different types of herpes. There is Herpes Simplex 1, a simple cold sore. Simplex 1 usually appears as a cold sore. Approximately 90% of the American population has it. As with all other forms of Herpes, the virus lays dormant somewhere is the spine and trigger factors renders it active, hence, a cold sore.
Genital herpes is similar in nature, only appears on the genitals. I don't know the statistics of people infected, but I know there is plenty of them. Abstain from sex (either oral or intercourse) when there is an active outbreak.
The Herpes Varicella virus commonly known as shingles is a by- product of chicken pox. Once a child has had chicken pox, the virus lays dormant, once again in the spine for many years. Most often middle age to the elderly will develop shingles.
All forms of herpes follows a nerve path somewhere in the body. For example, herpes varicella (shingles) can appear only around the waist area, the neck area, the face and scalp.
Without getting more into the physiology of herpes, I hope educating both parties of the nature of the virus will dispel any myths and misinformation. There are plenty of websites off Google or any search engine that will provide accurate information. I hope all goes well for those involved in the question.

Not myself but, I had a friend cj who had genital warts and she would start an relationship with a guy and sleep with them with out telling them and infect them with the herpes. The men of course would get very upset and break things off with her as i could understand. She has done this to more than 15 men that i know about, But on the men's behalf that this was done too i would be upset and blow things way out of proportion for this is something you have to life with for the rest of you're life!!!! So my opinion is if you have herpes and you want to be sexually active with someone you should definitely TELL them...

I know a few people with herpes and it is a curse that leaves a stigma as bad as HIV, only not life threatening. People freak because they are uneducated about it and ignorant. If you have herpes, always tell your partner, unfortunately some of them will run like you have leprosy and the ones who really care will work around it. Good Luck to you and have a great life.

I assume that you didn't tell them until after having sex? If they blew up on you that would not be out of proportion. You may have transmitted an incurable STD to them. You should tell people beforehand-always. You pur yourself before them and lied to them. This is where you are suppose to feel bad and learn something.
