I have been living with genital herpes for 5 years. The person that I am currently dating knows about it. After I told him, we have been intimate sexually with protection. Recently we've been talking mor about marriage and a solid future and he has questions about oral sex and whether we would always have to use condoms.

I have never had a severe outbreak. If I had not gone to the doctor on my own, I may have never found out. I have about one to two outbreaks per year; which consist of one small bump that lasts about 2-3 days.

Again we talked in detail about everything before we became intimate. My concern now is about the future. I know of couples that have been married with no transmission for years. Then I know of others that the partner became infected after the marriage.

What do I do? How do we proceed?

Yeah...you can have condom free sex; if he doesn't mind having herpes! Herpes is a viral infection; and it goes through a process called "viral shedding". This makes herpes contagious all the time!! You can pass it on even when you aren't having a breakout ! It is a common misconception that you can only pass it on during a breakout! That is so untrue! If you don't believe me, please ask your DR.! Haven't you seen those herpes commercials??

The short answer is: You are always at risk of giving him herpes, because there's no way to protect against it 100%. However, you can talk to your doctor about putting you on outbreak control medications and as long as your partner knows the risks, proceed as best for you both.

You gotta see how he feels, he may never get an outbreak, some people are different. And yes you can have a baby natural without a Cesarean as long as you are not having an outbreak, they give you a prescription so you don't get an outbreak.

You need to talk to him about whether or not he is comfortable with ever not using protection. None of us are going to be able to answer that for you. The risk of transmission when you are not having an active outbreak or the itchy/tingley/whatever pre-outbreak neuralgia you get is slim, but you have to be very "aware" of yourself.
