Both are not that good for you, but the yams are less bad for you. Red Potatoes are also better for you that white potatoes.

.A yam or sweet potato has more fiber and nutrients than a white potato but both are fine to be part of a well balanced meal plan for anyone. A sweet potato will raise blood sugar at a slower rate than a white potato.
There are NO foods people with diabetes can not eat!

if you are comparing a yam (in the us 98 % of the time it is a sweet potato I just read last week that only apx. 2% sold in the us are yams) to a potato then go w/ the sweet potato. It has a lower GI and is better for you from a whole grain point of view. Also a baked potato(eithe sweet or white) has a lower GI then that same potato over cooked or mashed.

Yam is considered harmful and toxic to the body if cooked less than one hour according to an Eastern health expert so watch out for those fried or steamed yam cooked in short periods of time.
Yam cooked in boiling water for one hour helps to cure haemorrhoids as it works in the spleen which in turn generates a remedy against haemorrhoids.

Do you mean sweet potato when you say Yum? If so that is the better choice as it is low GI. Also I think the small "new potatoes" are the white potato with the best GI.

neither...they are both very starchy and high-carb...the sugars in them break pretty quickly, as does rice. it's best to not eat them.
