Actually, catching HIV can be quite difficult given the fact that the virus itself is very fragile outside a suitable host cell. Becoming dry kills it. Soap kills it. Many other commonly used hygiene products kill it.
Remotely, there is the possibility that the man has the genetic immunity acquired by many eastern Europeans secondary to the medieval bubonic plague epidemic.
