like internally, not on purpose or anything. How can they make her breathe if both of her lungs are full of holes?

She probably had a pneumothorax. Sometimes the lung will "collapse" and by relieving it of pressure it will sort of "spring" back to life. Think of it like those space bags you've seen advertised on TV. All the air is sucked out and the bag is nice and flat but when you open it up the clothes just spring back to life.

Since it is a drama show they have to show the worst case scenario and use needle decompression (Didn't see the episode) however, most doctors use chest tubes to take care of this problem.
