You don't invite people to a bowling party and not pay the bowling fees whether it is last minute or not. So, you want them to attend, pay their fee, plus bring a gift? How about they bring the food too?
Your party will not be successful.
Just limit the amount of people and pay the fees. It's not just cheap not to pay it but it is rude and inconsiderate and definitely not Gracious hosting.

If you can't afford to host a bowling party for your guests, don't, find a less expensize alternative. Expecting people to pay for your party is in poor taste. What if they don't like to bowl, but want to come for the birthday boy/girl? People will be talking about you behind your back, even if they do pay for themselves. There is no "gracious" way to do this, you will look cheap no matter how you word it.

I would just write it in there. You could even put a note in there that gifts are optional that way since they are paying there own fee they wont feel like they are paying for the party and having to bring a gift too. You will be surprised how many people will still come and bring gifts. I did this for my son and everyone that came still bought a gift although it was a skating party.

Yep. Include it in the invitation. You can be polite about it. Just say, bowling cost $8.00.

Just write it on the invitation. When people are RSVPing they will know that is part of agreeing to go, and they can base their decision on that if they don't want to pay. . . .Makes sense to me, and I think people would understand.

well you could say that it is a surprize party and if you book the bowling alley you would give the surprize away. or, if you dont want to do that, you could always collect the money and then book it. but if they pay for their own then they might not be at the same alley like the party..... i dunno im not a good money advisor....
