I'm an RN who has worked in a number of clinical settings for over 25 years and unfortunately blood clots in the lungs are very serious. The good news is that the patient is in hospital and that medical tests have been undertaken to confirm this diagnosis as you shared. Now intensive medical treatment can be implemented. One of the potential dangers is that a piece of the clot/embolus might break off and could be transported by the blood or circulary system to the brain where it is termed a stroke. Good luck to the patient. I am sure that his/her medical specialits are keeping him/her informed of the progress and test results. Your support of the patient as he/she is hospitalized and getting well is a definite positive factor toward promoting health. God bless you.

What he has is called a pulmonary embolism, which can be a serious condition. An embolism happens when a clot forms somewhere in the body, breaks loose (making it an embolus), and travels to the lungs where it gets caught by the smaller blood vessels. It can be painful and dangerous because it can potentially block off the blood supply to parts of the lungs, which could lead to tissue death. That's the bad news. The good news is: he's in the hospital and is receiving treatment. So, it's likely that the medication will dissolve the clots and he will be fine. You need to ask your mother to speak with the doctors to find out where the original clot formed and if there is anything your dad can do to prevent future ones. Good luck.

If they are identified they become less dangerous (just by the fact that they acn be treated!) but they are still a serious matter and can cause death.

Well they are in the right place....the will need to monitored very closely but with proper guidance this person should be ok. They may have to take cumadine but they will be ok. The doctors won't let this person go home until they are stable!

Pretty serious, but if they've caught it and are giving anticlotting drugs, the prognosis is pretty decent.
