Everywhere I turn there's another bowl of glucose rising treats. So my question is what do my fellow diabetics do in such a situation? Do you have super extreme willpower and pass up the tasty treats? Or do you say screw it and take some quick acting insulin to counter the 4 fun size twix bars you just ate? Type 2’s, do you just indulge and let yourself ride high for a little while?

Come on now, it's Halloween! You've gotta eat a little candy... As long as it doesn't happen very often, a few high blood sugars aren't going to hurt you. Luckily I am on insulin, so I can cheat and then take some extra. Besides, what good is life if you can't indulge in a few Twix bars once in a while?!

If I am tempted by Halloween candies I go to the mall, eat a real meal at a good sit-down restaurant, waste some time wandering and shopping there until it is late. Then when I come home the treats and the trick and treaters are gone for another year.

Out of sight = out of mouth.

One thing you type one's should remember....

Taking additional insulin to counteract a Halloween candy inspired high blood sugar increase will facilitate glucose to fat metamorphosis.

In layman's terms, candy + insulin = fat!

However, if you think about it, on the reverse, we type one's have the best weight reduction system known to mankind. If we stop taking insulin, glucose cannot be processed and we go into ketoacidosis which burns fat DIRECTLY for energy. It can be toxic if you let it get out of hand. But control is what being type one is all about.

Oh, let me add one more thing. Halloween is the single most likely cause of triggering type 1 onset. Type 1 may be latent; however, if you have the gene, stressing your Islets of Langerhans to complete failure by going on a super sugar binge is a great way to bring out the gene and onset.

So to you parents out there: If there is a history of diabetes in your family, lock your kids up on Halloween.
