Depending on the closeness of your husband and his boss would aid in the selections.
What I did for a boss I was fairly close with, he had fallen ill and I got a gift bag and filled it with things like a hand held wooden massager, a book on a subject he liked and a CD of soothing music, helps if you have a clue to his type of music.
You can add some little inspirational things, what I did for my boss (who I knew believed in God) was I went to the Christian store and got him a pocket reminder, it is a small cross to go into his pocket w/his change and whenever he put his hand in he would feel the cross.
Hope the boss feels better soon.

I would send him a good book, assuming he enjoys reading at all. Buy something with some personal meaning to you, and older or rare addition or one from your library may mean more to him of course.
He will have a lot of recuperation time and you can only watch so much day time TV.
If that doesn't do it for you you may want to consider so puzzle books other other amusements. Maybe a DVD?

I had heart surgery in Jan 06. The best gifts I received: magazines & books. Harper's/GQ/The Hockey News Do not send him "porno" mags like a friend of mine gave me - heart can't take it for a while! He will be doing a lot of resting following surgery so reading is best.

I think some of the flower sites have plants instead of flowers. That might be a good decision. Flowers are ok, too, but maybe something small rather than a big smelly bouquet.

I've seen some coffee mugs that are wonderful for this sort of thing. Or there is always that old stand-by, the get-well card.
Good luck to your boss!

If you don't like him send a carton of cigarettes. Seriously, if he's going to be in bed awhile maybe get books or magazines.

Fruit basket is great. My mother in law had the same thing and she got one. She ate on the fruit for a few days. Loved it

How about a "Get well soon card?" Classic, not too girly, and inexpensive.
