Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.
After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.

How would you cut off a dogs tail, bit by bit or all at once? Same goes with stopping the smoking. cut it all at once and it will be much easier than the patches and all. With the patch you get the nicotine in small amounts all the time so how is that going to cut your off the drug? Just prolongs the agony. Stop cold and have someone you can call for some good words of encouragement. Instead of going to that nice easy chair that you always smoked at, go for a walk instead in the nice fresh air and breathe deep. when you get the urge, take a nice big glass of water instead and drink it like you have the fourth of July, Christmas and new years all rolled into one. Other things that will help are stay away from any alcohol or caffeine while you are trying to stop as they will make the urge a lot stronger. Eat very lite the first couple of days, with lots of fruit and fruit juices and lay off any spices that you normally use, chili, pepper, etc. After a week or so, you will see it is a lot easier to stay away from them and you can add some of the things back in your diet now. DAVID W and ramall 1 to are both correct. You can tell they have quit smoking. I tried everything there is to try, patches, pills, the cutting down of the number of cigarettes daily and nothing worked.
I realized you had to quit on your own, cold turkey. All the other devices are crutches. You feel safe using them, but at some point in time, you have to give them up. Once the crutch was gone, I would weaken or use any excuse I could to start up again.
I was amazed when I heard it is easier for men to quit cold turkey
than it is for women.
It is great not to get a panic attack when you are down to two cigs and it's 8:oo p.m. and have to run out for more before morning.
Take one day at a time. Don't look into the future. I discovered water and fruit juices help immensely. Choose a pacificer, so to speak. I had popcorn at my side. You have to baby yourself that first month or so.
After three weeks of sheer hell, someone said to me, "the worst is over. The craving is out of your system by now. It was just a habit. Get over it!" (That person is no longer on this planet )
I still want one. It feels like all of a sudden someone whacks you up side the head, when you least expect it and yells, "you want a cigarette real bad and you want it now!"
You feel such a sense of accomplishment when you say, no I don't. Today I choose not to smoke!!

never cold turkey you just have to have one less cigarette over a course of weeks make sure there are no negative influences, no1 is offering you nay and once you get down to one a day you will know when you can quit, i have been clean for 2 weeks and i cut down to one a day for about 2 weeks so just cut down to one

My dad was scared into quit smoking. He was told that smoking could result in this illness and that condition for his kids so he quit on the spot.
