Diabetes is a disease that can have many and varied affects on the body, not the least of which is a 'deadening' of the nerve function in a person's extremeties and a shift in the 'flatness' of the arch on a person's foot. Because of both of these, it's generally accepted that those with diabetes should protect their feet at all times to keep from injuring themselves without realizing it. Just look around on the 'net and you can find shoes made specifically to support and protect the feet.

Diabetic shoes are shoes that are
1. Fitted more carefully
2. Provide for more air flow around the feet
3. have softer insides
They are designed to lessen the likelihood of the foot problems - ulcers etc - that are often associated with diabetes
Most people involved in the care of diabetics feel that good control of blood sugar and good foot care is enough to prevent foot problems. I have not talked to an RN that specialized in diabetic care that recommended the shoes. However, that is not to say that under certain circumstances they might not be of some help. But I would talk to my MD or APN before I spent money on special shoes.
