Bit of a tricky question.
Firstly - there are a ton of different types of these wart viruses and only about 30 of them are transmitted sexually to produce genital warts.
Like many other viruses they are readily transmitted, however whether the recipient produces warts depends a bit on their immune system. It is quite a contagious virus.
There are some people who get a dose of the virus (HPV - human papilloma virus) and manage to wipe it out before developing warts.
Hence not everyone who has sex with someone with genital warts will get genital warts themselves.

Your friend is right. They might get them or they might not.
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is responsible for genital warts. HPV can be passed to another person whether they have warts present or not. There are over 100 different kinds of HPV. It can cause several different kinds of warts including genital, hand and feet warts and it can cause several different kinds of cancer including cervical, penile, anal, head and neck cancer.
If a person with warts has sex with someone they can definitely get the virus from that person. HPV can be spread by sex and by direct skin to skin contact with the area. That person might be lucky and not contract the virus, but there is always a chance that they can contract it if they have sex with someone who has HPV. I contracted HPV over 5 years ago from a guy who was showing NO signs or symptoms of the virus.

Yes, genital warts are very contagious. You can get them (the virus) from sex or just from skin contact in that area.
You can also get it if no warts are visible on the person. I know that firsthand.

Your friend is right! Think about it - how did the first person get genital warts? They are very contagious so you should always protect yourself.

Sorry to pop your bubble, but your friend is right. HVP (Human Papilloma Virus) known as genital warts, are very contagious and some are known to cause cervical cancer. Go read up on the subject and educate yourself.
