there are several factors...

Heredity (family history) would predispose you to hypertension and there's nothing you can do to change that.

There are alterable lifestyle factors that can also lead to hypertension such as smoking, eating fatty foods or foods high in sodium, excessive stress, not monitoring/treating other diseases like diabetes etc.

Often it is due to arteries and veins getting clogged up with cholesterol. This causes high blood pressure, which is hypertension.

Other health problems can be a cause as well, but the most common culprit is high cholesterol.

Hypertension needs to be closely checked on and regulated with exercise, medication, and diet.

There is such a ton of stuff about hypertension that nobody could hope to summarize it all here. Just use your favorite search engine, type in "Hypertension" and I promise you it will bring up enough expert information to keep you busy all day long, and then some.
