Yes, in a way. There is NO cure for HPV, but if your immune system is strong it can fight it off and into a "remission" of sorts. In other words, it can go dormant and non-active, if it is not active it will not hurt you. However, all it takes is a little weakness in your immune system to flare back up again. That's why so many people have HPV for years and never know it then *poof* they all the sudden have warts or dysplasia. Keep in mind though, HPV is very common and most people are able to fight it off for good and never have a problem.
"High risk" strains of HPV can cause precancerous cells of the cervix, vulva, vagina, and anus in women. "Low risk" strains are usually associated with genital warts and do not go onto cause precancerous changes. You can have one or both strains of HPV and not know it. Your physician can test you for HPV along with your pap, just ask.
There is no approved testing for men at this time. Most of the time the only way a man knows that he has HPV is because he has genital warts. He can have it and pass it on unknowingly. You can not tell by looking at someone if they have it or not and condoms cannot fully protect you.

Some strains of HPV can clear up on there own but most do not, I know this because I recently had a cervical cancer scare which originated from a strain of HPV and I am also a nursing student. Be very responsible about the partner you are choosing to be with and always practice safe sex, make sure you have a pap test every year and ask your doctor to test for HPV when you have your pap smear. Unfortunately there is no test for men with HPV unless it is visible on the penis and then a doctor can examine him by pouring a vinegar solution over the area.

There are several strands of HPV. One of the most commonly known types is genital warts. Over half the population has HPV unfortunately some know but most don't. If someone has precancerous cells they could have about a 70% chance the body may fight the abnormal cells. HPV can remain dormant in your system and never affect you. It can also lead to cervical cancer in some cases if a routine pap is not done.

There is no "cure" for HPV, but in most cases women are able to basically "fight off" the virus. Some people are not so lucky though and will have it their entire life.
There is a new vaccine out called Gardasil for HPV. It protects against 4 different kinds of HPV. Two kinds known to cause about 90% of genital warts and two known to cause about 70% of cervical cancer. I have heard it has had great results so far! You might want to considered checking into that if you haven't already.
Also, there is NO test for men to detect HPV. Men usually find out they have the virus by developing warts or by finding out their girlfriend or wife has developed HPV. Even if a guy doesn't develop warts, he may still have the virus and it may be possible for him to spread it to others.
Check out these sites for more info on HPV and the vaccine for it:

HPV is a virus, there is no cure for viruses. The correct term for HPV is Human Papilloma Virus. There are over 70 strains of this virus. It is caused by skin to skin contact. You don't have to have actual insertion of the penis to pass this. Skin to skin genital contact is enough.
Estimates are that at least 50%of sexually active individuals are carrying this virus. It causes genital warts. However, genital warts may not appear externally. They can be on your cervix. The only way to detect hpv in women is with a pap smear. Men require an expensive blood test that most insurance companies do not cover, nor can you get it as a standard screening from a local free clinic.
Most cervical cancer is caused by this virus. This can also cause infertility in women.
The commercials about HPV are advertising a vaccine. These commercials are to promote drugs. This "Tell someone" campaign doesn't tell you all you need to know. The best source of information would be the CDC. You can also contact your county health department. They are required by law to keep up to date records on infection rates.
This is a deadly STD for women. If you are not positive today, get tested in 6 months. Make every person you are with get tested. This could kill you and with infections rates this high, remember you are more likely to get this virus than AIDS.
Good luck and be safe.

look at chicken pox--- it's herpes(truth) but it's in remission for the rest of your life after you get it. Same with HPV, it's not herpes but once you get it your body can clear up the warts on its own and it will be in remission but you will still have the viruses, yes it's more than one. Anyone can have it and not know it, most people never do.
An std test would help but its harder to test men. Remember if he cheats on you that wont save you from her. There are so many things that can happen.
I got HPV after I was raped and my warts cleared up on the out side after the doctor gave me medicine but still grow and change on the inside. Even if someones warts were to clear up by themselves that wouldn't guarantee that they still wouldn't get some form of cancer. That is assuming that one gets HPV warts and not HPV thats high risk cancer

I don't think it clears by itself. I wish it did. I was diagnosed with hpv when I found out I was pregnant 8 months ago. You could have hpv and not even kow it. I am a prime example.I have been with my husband for 8 years now. He is the only one for 8 years and I am his only one ever. I got hpv obviously many years ago. It never showed up in my pap tests before...but my doc said when you are pregnant, your hormone level is higher and that is when you can see most proeblems. Don't be afraid to enjoy yourself...just be careful!

HPV is what causes genital warts. You can carry the virus and never get genital wart. Once you have the virus, you have it for life, there is no cure. If you get genital warts, they can be removed.
To find out if one has HPV, a simple blood test should do the trick, but they have to test specifically for HPV.
The best way to prevent the transmission of any STD is to not have sex, the next best way is to make sure the man uses a condom.

Whoa! The only TV commercial I've seen lately tells us that HPV CAUSES certain types of cancer in us (cervical, etc) & is very dangerous. Your fear is what really worries me. Educate yourself & ask a nurse practitioner to explain these.things. Yes, testing anyone for anything is a great idea! But as I said...don't live in fear with false information...that will make you make mistakes & cause you to start believing dangerous untruths.
